For the reseller

GenX Mobile: today it is part of Sierra Wireless — know what you are buying

Californian manufacturer that designed telematics devices for tracking, security and fleet service companies. In 2016 it was acquired by Sierra Wireless, so it is no longer an independent brand.

What that means for you: it is not a brand for building a new catalogue, it is an installed base. If you inherit GNX devices from a customer, they date from that period.

Where the business is: in the migration, which is the easiest sale there is. That customer already pays for a tracking service and already understands what it is for; there is nothing to convince him of, only a device to change.

What to watch: after an acquisition, spares and support for the old product run out sooner than you expect. Check the network generation of those units too: if they are 2G you have a deadline, and the customer deserves months of warning.

If you inherit it already installed, start here: devices that stop reporting, which protocol your device speaks and what to check when a device goes quiet.
