How do I check which protocol my GPS uses?

Type the IMEI above. From the number we tell you what the device is and, if it is a tracker, which protocol it speaks. You don't need to open the unit or hunt for the manual.

Can the protocol be found from the IMEI alone?

Yes, and it is the most reliable thing an IMEI gives you. The exact model cannot always be stated — some codes are shared by as many as seven different models — but the protocol can, and that is what you need to connect the device to a platform.

Why does the protocol matter more than the brand?

Because compatibility is decided by the protocol, not by the name on the box. One manufacturer may use several, and two different brands may speak the same one. It is the first thing to know before buying a batch.

What if I want to look up a model's protocol rather than an IMEI?

Every protocol has its own page with the devices that speak it and what to watch out for. They are linked below, and you can also search the model in the compatibility tool.

How do I find a GPS device's brand and model from its IMEI?

Type the number and we tell you the brand and, where possible, the model. Mind the small print: some codes are shared by several models, so the exact model cannot always be stated. Anyone who says otherwise is bluffing.

Is this IMEI a phone or a tracker?

We tell you that too. It is the first question to answer, because IMEI databases are built for phones and with a tracker they usually answer the modem inside rather than the device.

Is checking, verifying and looking up an IMEI the same thing?

Yes, it is the same thing and it works the same way here: type the number and we tell you what the device is. The wording changes from country to country; the lookup does not.

Where do I find the IMEI of a GPS tracker?

On the label stuck to the device, almost always next to the barcode and 15 digits long. If the device is already installed and you cannot see it, it usually appears in the tracking panel, on the vehicle's record: it is the number the device identifies itself with when it reports.

What is the TAC of an IMEI?

The first 8 digits. They identify the device model, not the individual unit. The next 6 are the serial number and the last one is a check digit.

Why do other sites tell me my GPS tracker is a Quectel or a SIMCom?

Because those brands make the modem inside the tracker, and many manufacturers use the modem's TAC. The answer is correct but useless for configuring the device: what you need to know is the protocol.

Can the exact model be known from the IMEI alone?

Not always, and anyone telling you otherwise is lying. Measured on a fleet of more than 2,500 devices: some TACs are shared by up to seven different models. What can be stated reliably is the protocol, which is what you need to connect it.

Do you store the IMEI I type?

No. The lookup happens entirely inside your browser: the number never leaves your device and never reaches any server of ours.

Do you tell me whether the device is stolen or blocked?

No. This is not a mobile blacklist check and we do not do unlocking. It is a tool to identify tracking devices and find out how to connect them.

My IMEI does not have 15 digits, is it wrong?

Not necessarily. Many trackers identify themselves with 14 or 16 digits and connect just the same in practice. The tool accepts them.
