For the reseller

Satamatics: a historic satellite brand — today an installed base, not a catalogue

Satamatics was founded in 2001 in Tewkesbury, United Kingdom, with machine-to-machine satellite services over the Inmarsat network. Its SAT-101, SAT-201 and SAT-202 were used in land transport, oil and gas and the maritime world. In 2008 it was bought by EMS Technologies and its business folded into that company's global tracking unit.

What that means for you: it is not a brand for building a new catalogue. When it appears, it appears installed — usually at a customer who has had it for years because he operates where there is no cellular coverage.

Where the business is: in the migration, and it is an excellent customer. He already pays for an expensive service, already knows he needs it, and has no terrestrial alternative. Offer him a current satellite device and you keep a high-value account.

What to watch: the cost of the satellite link is recurring and far above a SIM. Build it into your price from day one and explain that it is quoted per event, not per continuous report.

For selling where there is no coverage: satellite coverage, tracking in agriculture and freight transport.
